***Tapers Notes:
A great performance from Brandi and the band this night, but it was not so great
for taping. I had to leave the recorder on the ground for all but the last two
songs, and in doing so, it picked up alot of people around us - especially a
clapper that needs to take lessons on keeping a beat.
Also in recording from the ground level the resulting midrange was flat, so I
had to do alot of mid EQ to revive it, but its hard to get something there that
was missing, but I did the best I could.
You may also want to reduce your bass when you play this recording, as the CSB
mics are generally boomy to begin with, and that is clearly evident in this
recording. I did not enhance nore reduce the low end when I EQ'd.
I want to thank taper vanark for also recording this show. His recording, done
from the side, came out sounding very nice and clean! Thank you!
Maybe there's wiggle room for a future platinum edition for these as a matrix?
Who knows . . .

NOTES: Geddy said a few words in between Subdivisions and Natural Science regarding the minature Professor next to his keyboards. Some of those words included the phrase: "The scientists at Rush productions spare no expense to bring you the finest special effects", hence the title for this release is born. MASTERING NOTES: This recording is dedicated to my son Nathan. This was his first concert ever, and it can't get any better to have him partake in experiencing the #1 band in the word - RUSH. He says hello to his best friend Kyle at the very beginning of the recording. This is a good quality recording. It is raw and has NO EQ. Some hard limiting (peak -1dB) was performed during the explosions (Far Cry and 2112). A 6dB boost was needed for the entire recording, as I had the levels set low. ARTWORK: Included. Feel free to use it or make your own. THANKS: Special thanks to the Granite Grady hookup in Hooksett, NH before the show, especially to LakesideMaiden and Der Trommler for hosting. A special thanks for the permission to include the very nice photos from LakesideMaiden, kbomb106, and others in this collection ;-) ~~~~~~ TRADE FREELY but please, do not trade in MP3 or other lossy format. As always, please support Rush by purchasing their music and seeing them live. ~~~~~~ Upped by SolitaryPine - July 2008 |

Rush NOTES: Good night for a show. Cool temperatures (about 65F degrees) and a Geddy makes a couple of references to this night being a certain pinnacle The inspiration for this release's name came immediately following the MASTERING NOTES: This is my first RUSH ROIO. Hopefully not the last. This is a good recording, but not spectacular by any means. I was far from I hear there are at least 2 more recordings of this show. One is from section 2 Some things I do not like about this recording: Other that what I mention here for mastering, this recording is raw and has ARTWORK: The cover is supposed to be themed about an ISP Firewall with the S&A logo on it. THANKS: I want to thank Leigh & Dave (trf 1001001) for providing shelter and food prior A special thanks for the permission to include the very nice photos from Spike ~~~~~~ TRADE FREELY but please, do not trade in MP3 or other lossy format. NOTES:
Styx and REO Speedwagon both opened up for Def Leppard - as is true for pretty much of all the US shows Leppard is doing on their current tour. That is why the Styx set is short.
* There is a story around the seating arrangements for me during
the Styx set. I was originally seated in the wrong section due to
the error not my own, and during Foolin' Yourself, I got uprooted
and guided to my real, and much better, mind you, seat. Instead
of being in the last seat of the 4th row all the way to the left,
I now found myself in the 3rd seat to the left of the catwalk stage,
only 10 feet to the left of dead center.
So, I must apologize for the super variations in stereo separation,
phasing, level drops, and other various audio artifacts as I was
moving. You can even hear the floor arena guide say to me "I think
you will like this change" in the recording. Trust me, I loved the
change. The sound quality was 100% better in my new seat as I now
had true stereo separation between the speaker stacks. It really
could not have benn better for my steath binaurals mics positioned
as they were.
This recording is "raw" and no equalization or gain was performed, only
fades were made with CE Pro.

NOTES:
Good performance by REO tonight! Seeing how there seems to be a lack of them on the various torrent sites, I figured this would be a nice addition to the collection.
I was thinking that I could have probably gotten away with having the bass roll off filter turned OFF for REO to enhance the low end a bit, but I left it enabled.
The audience around me was pretty well behaved. Nothing could
be done about the people yelling, screaming, and singing, and
there was no other place for me to move to even if I wanted to
get away from it.
This recording is "raw" and no equalization was performed, only
minor amplification (3dB in some spots) and fades were made with CE Pro.

NOTES:
With Styx and REO Speedwagon as openers, Def Leppard rocked
the house this night. They were so loud at times that the amp
system could be heard clipping with some distortion.
The audience around me was pretty well behaved. Nothing could
be done about the people yelling, screaming, and singing, and
there was no other place for me to move to even if I wanted to
get away from it.
I had no idea that they had a catwalk for this tour. That posed issues for me as it forced the occasional phasing between left
and right channels when I turned around. I tried to do my best
and not turn that often.
For this release, I investigated making this whole thing fit on
one CD, but I did not want to trim a few more minutes off
unfairly to do so. I will leave it up to you if you want to do
that.
This recording is "raw" and no equalization was performed, only amplification (3dB for most songs) and fades were made with CE Pro.

The Acton Jazz Cafe is a nice little venue that seats about 80 people,
and tonight every seat was full - it was a sold out show.
The sounds was good. The house sound system is a little on the shallow
side, but then again, for a jazz cafe, not much is needed.
NewEARS had a sound engineer present to mix the house sound. There
were also a number of home video cameras running this night to
capture the show from a number of angles. From what I have heard,
alot of that footage is very dark as they dimmed the house lights
way down when the show started.
I think this audio recording turned out very well considering we
were off to the right side of the audience (not by any means
centered between the house speakers). People near by were pretty
quiet, and there were only a few times when the waitress caused
a bit of noise and inadvertent phasing with her movement.
I did nothing to this recording - it is raw - except to downsample,
split the tracks, and encode to flac.
The Tony Levin set is a bit on the quiet side. The IZZ set is a bit
louder, simply because they were louder than Tony.
Oh yes, and a final point of clarification - Tony did in fact "open" for
IZZ. IZZ was the headliner.
Tony's set
Tony's set was great. He used is little
MAC G3 as his "band
in a box", so when you hear a backing band when he plays, it's
his G3 in
the mix. He also did quite a bit of speaking in between songs, answering
questions, and confirming some of the information already
known about the 2008 King Crimson tour and lineup (Gavin Harrison
of Porcupine Tree is the 2nd drummer). I asked Tony after the show
if the lineup for the 2008 KC would be the same lineup used for 2009
and he jokingly said something to the effect that the lineup
changes month to month.... meaning that he had no comment on the
matter, really (I may as well have been talking to the wind ;-)=
IZZ's
set
IZZ was very good, and besides a few inopportune vocal
microphone feedback issues, the overall sound was excellent.
Jam Set
Now what a surprise this was! You know you were in for a treat when
they opened the jam set with Elephant Talk!
Nice to see a couple of classic PG tunes thrown in there too. Truly
great.

NOTES:
This came from an FM live broadcast (WAAF, 107.3) where Blue
Oyster Cult was
the headliner and Aldo Nova was the opener. Supposedly it was the
first show
(a.k.a. opening night) for the new Worcester Centrum.
I had my mom record the show ay home while I attended it, but my
casette tape
of the show got erased after some years! Bummer.
After doing some searching for other B.O.C. shows, I came across
a guy who had
this same show recording in reel-to-reel format. He converted it
to FLAC and
gave it to me to then share with all of you.
The one caveat of this
recording is that a track is missing. Unfortunately,
the aterix2112 ran out of tape on the reel to reel!

NOTES:
The Edge was a short lived garage/high school band that
consisted of many of the same members that the Tombstone
Blues Band was made of, formed sometime around 1982, in
Sudbury, Massachusetts, USA.
This band members did not go any further in terms of having
fame and fortune, however, the bands bassist, Mike Gordon,
ended up being the bassist for Phish.
From what I recall, the band wanted to record some of their
covers, and they did so in a few takes down in Bruce's
basement. If you listen carefully to some of these songs,
you will sometimes here two copies mixed in at the same time.
This is due to the mixing of multiple sources to from
multiple "takes".
I also think there is a 1st generation tape or even a CD
floating around someplace of these same songs. I may have it
in my possession and there may be a copy of it someplace else
as well. That would prove to be much higher in quality than
what is here.
But, alas, enjoy what it is.

NOTES:
The Tombstone Blues Band was a short lived high school band
formed in 1982 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, USA. They were formed
from the remaining members of The Edge band.
The primary bassist for the group, Mike Gordon, went on to be
a member of the world famous band Phish.
The master CD-R is one of a small number (3 or 4) which were made in
the year 1996. I found the original cassette tape in my archives at
that time and got a friend at work to help digitize the tape (in hopes
to preserve it). He had a deck that could play back 12x speed tapes
(which at the time did not really matter as we could have sped up the
digital tracks digitally). I do recall spending an afternoon making
the digitized tracks, some quick artwork, and burning a few CD-Rs.
I got two copies of the CD-R with artwork, plus the mater without art,
my work friend kept a copy, and a copy was given to Mike Gorton by me
when we last hooked up for the meet-and-greet after the Phish show
at the Worcester Centrum Centre in Massachusetts on Friday
November 27th, 1998.

NOTES:
The Tombstone Blues Band was a short lived high school band
formed in 1982 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, USA.
The primary bassist for the group, Mike Gordon, went on to be
the bassist for Phish. In this live performance, he sings Good
Lovin' and Riders on the Storm.
He also has a pretty cool base
line that follows the drum solo.
Songs requiring the keyboard calls Mike to action as well (like
Won't Get Fooled Again), while Kerry plays bass.
In going through some old tapes in my basement, I found this
first generation tape and decided to give it a listen. Sure
enough, it turned out to be what it was labeled as, The TB Band,
so I figured it would be worth digitizing it and sharing it.
As far as I know, this is the only instance recording of this show.
The tape's age is showing itself significantly in this recording.
There are allot of drop outs in both channels from time to time.
I did nothing to specifically fix any of the tape deficiencies
in this recording - I left them all as is.
Also, because of not having a sound board for this show (where all
instruments a mic'd and piped back to board for mixing) the
phenomenon of "whomever is loudest wins" exists. So, the drums and
bass are light in the mix many times whereas the guitars, keyboards,
and vocals are more up front. This is the nature of the beast
when your recording microphones are voice mics (don't remember the
brand but they were typically something like Shure stage voice mics).
TRADE FREELY but please, do not trade in MP3 or other lossy format.
This is not intended for RESALE!
PLEASE.... I would kindly like to ask that nobody re-seed this release on any other tracker or source without at least notifying me in advance. The same goes for any remastering or artwork projects. |

The 1982 Timeline and History (My personal
perspective)
Historical accuracy is strived for here,
and what I have is stated to the best of my recollection, but I may
be off on some things.
Feel free to provide corrections and commentaries
as needed. Contact me here (correct
the email address before sending it).
Note that in January 2008, I got contacted by Kerry Keefe and he adds a bunch or corrections to my timeline. These are summarized below:
In January 2008 , Kerry Writes:
... I think you have it a little bit backwards. The Tombstone Blues was first. We began sometime around 1979 when Dan McBride and I met at a Boy Scout camp out in Bolton . We were both getting our order of the arrow status. I think Paul Carpenter was with us too. Anyhow Dan and I hit it off and began playing together and we ended up brining in Bruce and Mike. Later on or about 1982, I was having such a good time partying, being a local rock star and going girl crazy, I ended up getting a bunch of D-Slips in school and my Dad pulled me from the band. Peter Paul was playing with a group called black rose who used to open for us at the teen center. When my Dad pulled me for the semester that’s when they brought in Peter and I was out. I ended up hooking up with Scott Mitchell from Black Rose and with a kid from Framingham and another friend from Hopkinton we put together 4 Below Zero. We later ditched Scott and picked up two of the hottest drummers in Framingham and had an outstanding Allman Bros type band which lit up Framingham for about a year. Anyhow, we all went on to college and the rest is history. ....
Also, I used to play Rhythm and Lead guitars when I wasn’t playing bass for Mike. (As well as vocals and harmonica). Also we didn’t write Boney Maroney. That was an old soul tune that we covered. We were actually covering, Johnny Winter’s cover of Boney Maroney if that makes any sense
Thanks for saving this bit of history. Blessings. Kerry.
(See below for more input from Kerry).
In chronological order (from my [somewhat
corrected] recollection):
The Tombstone Blues was the first band
The
Edge was the second band
I was a sound and light man for The Edge.
Myself and Mark Hendershot were sound and light crew for The Tombstone
Blues band.
We all grew up together in Sudbury, Mass. Bruce Diehl was a neighbor
of mine and we all hung out, more or less, in the same social ring.
I was an disc jockey at the Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School
(LSRHS) radio station - WYAJ, 88.1 FM, so music has always been a
passion for me. I extended this passion in working with these bands
as often as could.
Of course, back then, nobody foresaw the future of the bands or it's members, but I am certainly glad that some sort of recording and archive was made to preserve these early years.
A few times, the Tombstone Blues band would
come and do an "on the air" interview with me on my radio
show. Allot of my shows I have on cassette tape as well, and I have
yet to digitize all of them, and locate the specific band interview,
but hopefully in time something may turn up and get released. As
far as I recall, I never played any of either bands music on the
air.
Liz Allen was the lead vocalist for the Edge, and she always did
a bang up job at it. She was a very attractive blonde who had an
excellent presence about her.
We all know about Mike Gordon, the quiet and reserved bassist, keyboardist, and
sometimes vocalist. He was always good with improvised musical moments.
Peter Paul was the lead and rhythm guitar and backing vocalist.
Quiet but fiery with his guitar and effects.
Bruce Diehl, the percussionist and seemingly, visionary and glue for the group.
If it was not for his house and basement, these moments may have never transpired.
I think The Edge did a few live gigs in Sudbury. I think one may have been the
LSRHS cafeteria during one of the schools Spring Fling events. None of their
live gigs were ever recorded, but they did manage to get a basement tape made
up of their cover work (they also did not have any original material of their
own), which is what is described herein.
A bit more mature and wise
to the ways of performing and with sharper skills, or so it seemed, was the Tombstone
Blues. The reasons why Liz and Peter
left the band is unknown, but it can probably be chalked up to "life reasons".
The band found Dan McBride, a firm Bob Dylan fan, resulting in a good songwriter.
He led the band in the new direction of writing original material. Kerry Keefe
was the humorous part of the band fabric.
(See Kerry's email corrections up above).
The band spent allot of time practicing on weekends and sometimes on
weeknights, and had quite a few original songs. The studio performance
in this release is a compilation of all of their original material.
This consistent of the following songs:
Uptown Mama
March to the Beat of the Drum
Damn Fool Father
Hell or Canada
Boney Maroney (Kerry writes: We were actually covering Johnny Winter’s
cover of Boney Maroney, so this is a cover tune)
The exact origin of each song and it's meaning was something I never really
found out, but you can tell by the lyrics what each is about.
The also did quite a few cover songs, some of which are included in
the live performance in this release. They also covered other songs,
many of which slip my mind.
Mike Gordon's website says (under The Edge
link at http://www.mike-gordon.com/projects/):
Tombstone Blues guitarist Kerry (though
a great, soulful player) had a lot of homework and lived a few
towns away, so Mike and TSB started playing with Sudbury guitar
slicker Peter Paul and vocalist Liz Allen. The genre rotated toward
New Wave like Talking Heads, Bow Wow Wow, and Mike singing Turning
Japanese by The Vapors. This get-up would go and play at company
parties for Mike's Dad's Store 24. The band's name came from Bruce
pointing randomly at a big map. He hit the border. Not too clever,
especially considering the U2 similarity. Chuck Mills, by the way,
was the band's "transportation manager," trying daily to
fix Mike's only vehicle - a bright red and orange Store 24 van with 2s and 4s
trailing off the sides. Geoff Payson was lighting guy and he constructed his
own truss system using actual heavy plumbing pipes to hold up lighting banks
- the whole thing only fell over once. Soundman Mike Catalanotti later created
a website with some of the band's old songs. We cant find the
link.
I did have some history about them on a website
once (it was on AOL back in the mid 90's), and for the life of me
I don't think that it ever got backed up or saved. I'm still looking
for those pages from way back when. Fingers
crossed.
Funny world it is. Chuck Mills is now my brother in law. I married
his sister Dawn!!! Geoff Payson and I did a quick 1 day internship
together at WBCN 104.1 in Boston . That was short lived. That's a
story for another place and time.
I miss those days. Simpler, and worth every damn minute (in terms of
wisdom!)

*note* we were young suburban pot smoking socialists at
the time. I’m presently in recovery but still vote
democrat! Ho Ho Ho! I remember my Dad (even though
he held many of the same sentiments) kind of hiding his face when
we played this, hoping none of his friends who served in Vietnam
would hear it.
Johnny B. Goode / Start me up: Chuck

Lead Guitar: Dan McBride
Lead Vocal, Rhythm Guitar, back up vocal: Kerry Keefe

Damn Fool Father Kerry Keefe
Slide Guitar: Dan McBride

*note* this was written about and directed at the moral majority. Remember this was 1980 something and we were beginning the Regan years. We were only a handful of years out of Vietnam and were kind of tired and frankly scared by all the tough talk coming from the right. Being young idealist we thought maybe showing the communists a little love might get us a little farther along. Many feel that our escalation of the cold war was what won it, but I’m still convinced that communism would have fizzled out by itself anyway.
Get Back: The Beatles

Lead Vocal and Farfisa Organ: Mike Gordon
Lead Guitar, back up vocal: Dan McBride
Bass Guitar: Kerry Keefe
Drums: Bruce Diehl
*note* when you listen to the organ part it is interesting to realize that when the Who did this part it was done by sampling and using a synthesizer. In this version, Mike learned and memorized all the notes and did the parts note for note from the album on a simple (perpetually rented) Farfisa keyboard. Mike had a real gift at the time for listening to music and learning it note for note. Listen to Rider’s on the Storm, same thing there. I remember Mike learning the entire Harmonica solo to Wammer Jammer by J. Geils Band and also playing Love Reign Oer Me by the Who. (I would love to get a hold of those recordings). He was the guy who learned the songs and taught us (at least me) how to play them. I was glad to see that Mike had his experience with Phish and was able to transfer this ability to original music and improvisation.
Its All Over Now: Bobby Womack,
Stones version
Lead Vocal, Rhythm Guitar: Kerry Keefe
Lead Guitar, back up vocal: Dan McBride
Bass Guitar: Mike Gordon
Drums: Bruce Diehl
Jumpin’ Jack Flash: The
